Thanks to making backup you can recover the content of your blog and not lose it if something serious happens, be it your blogspot or wordpress blog.

Do not tell me that it has never crossed your mind that you could lose your blog, that you arrive one day and due to an error your blog does not exist, this happens often, there are irrecoverable errors and 500 errors after which we must restore our blog sometimes to get them back.

It is important to add this task to the maintenance list of your blog so that you can rest easy.

What is a Backup?

A backup is a copy of a file or a set of information that allows us that in case of a problem in which we lose everything we can restore that copy that we have saved to the point where we made it and we will have the blog again thanks to backup, hence we must do it very often.

Sometimes some plugins allow you to host your backups in the cloud, dropbox, amazon, mail so they don’t take up space on your computer.

One tip is to avoid doing them on the blog’s own server since if the failure is serious you may not have access to your backup.

Why do these blog backups have to be done so often?

If you make a constant backup of your blog you will have all the updated data, imagine that the last backup was made 6 months ago, you will have lost almost all your posts (although if time has not passed we can recover some with a trick).

It is very important to schedule the backup or have a date assigned to it.

As you need the last copy to restore it, it is best to do it often, you can, in the case of wordpress.org, schedule the frequency and send the backup to a place with sufficient capacity that you have access to.

In the case of Blogspot, blogger or wordpress.org you must reserve a day to do it continuously depending on the frequency with which you publish.

Imagine that when you restore the copy you have it made a long time ago with an old template and much less post, you would return to that point.

When is it important to make a backup?

Before and after major changes such as installations, template changes or remodeling, it is convenient that you make a backup copy so as not to lose the changes just made and, most importantly, a previous one in case there is a fight of plugins and you see the White screen of the death.

Imagine that you want to install a new template and you don’t like it, or you install plugins that are compatible with us many things can happen and if you prevent it, you will work with more peace of mind.

Is it difficult to backup a blog?

It is very easy, depending on the platform, you can do it in different ways:

  1. In wordpress.org (self-hosted) there are paid and free plugins that can do it very easily. You can also access via FTP or the file manager of your hosting and download the blog completely manually and have it saved, I often do it at least once a month because the blog is huge.
  2. In WordPress.com directly through the platform you can do it in a minute.
  3. In blogger or blogspot also on the platform you have the option to do it in a moment.

Let’s do the bakup on wordpress.org

For this, we either have the option to download the complete blog by FTP, but this option is a bit of a beast and the best thing is through a plugin:

One of the plugins that I recommend is Backupwordpress and it is free although you have the possibility to choose more paid functions.

It allows you to assign different frequencies to the backup of the database and with one click you have it solved.

Another option is to do it through a plugin that you have installed, in the case of the security plugin Ithemes has this option through which the copy is usually sent to me by mail.

In blogger and wordpress it is much easier but with the disadvantage that there is no plugin and who has to remember it is you, so every so often do it.

Make a backup or export the blog on wordpress.com

In wordpress.com it is done through tools and in tools choose export and you will download an XML copy of your blog immediately.

Backup to blogger or blogspot

In Blogspot it is done through the desktop and in the template you will see in the upper right a button that says create / restore backup.
